My name is Chris Wearn.  I hope you are all ready to rock this summer!   If you’re curious about me, here is a little about my life…by the numbers.

599- The number of words I used to describe myself below, for those of you who are interested in something a little deeper that the facts and numbers could convey…
I consider myself to be an outdoor educator, an adventure seeker, and a perpetual student of life.
Outdoor education is something I have dedicated myself to since leaving college, and it is a central part of who I am.  Everyone in this world has a gift to contribute--something they are passionate about, they are talented in, and that makes a positive difference in people’s lives.  For me, this is outdoor education.  In these past three years, I have had the opportunity to work with several great organizations, including NOLS (a wilderness leadership school based in Wyoming), Multnomah Outdoor School (an environmental middle school program in Portland), and Camp Four Winds (a summer camp in the San Juan Islands of Washington State).  After working in many corners of outdoor education I have found that I especially love working with children.  I enjoy the energy they bring, the imagination they hold, and the reminders they provide to laugh and play.  Even more, I celebrate their boundless capacity for discovery and growth.  When working with children I strive to unlock potential, promote self-discovery, and inspire this growth.
I am also an adventure seeker.  I am somebody who draws energy from challenges.  I remember my semester long experience during college with Sea Education Association (SEA Semester).  We were several weeks at sea in the North Atlantic.  We were learning to sail a square rigged ship and our minds were filled each day with more line handling skills and sail maneuvers than I could imagine.  Simultaneously, we were developing independent oceanographic research projects and standing watch in rotations 24 hours a day.  I remember pulling myself out bed to stand a dawn watch in the rain. While my body and mind were exhausted, there was a part of me that had never been so invigorated.  I believe that the most challenging personal experiences are ultimately the most rewarding.  For anyone who loves adventure, there is a part in their core that will always crave challenges, a part where their passion for learning and growing lies.  It is this part that has driven me towards some of the most memorable experiences of my life.  I have backpacked through the High Sierras, traveled across India, studied in Argentina, sailed the Gulf of California, and kayaked the Salish Sea.  Still, I honestly believe, there is no place where the spirit of adventure and growth are so present than at a meaningful summer camp.
I consider myself also to be a student of life.  Equal to my passion for teaching, I consider my passion for learning integral to my identity.  From economics, to yoga, to music, to sailing, to baking, to wilderness medicine, to Spanish, to art, to mediation, I love seeking new knowledge and skills.
Recently, I have turned this passion for learning towards understanding what defines great leadership.  I believe that leadership is ultimately about service; the best leaders I know feel this deeply.  They are self-aware, humble, and inspirational.  I believe in strength based leadership-- understanding your strengths and those of others, and working to develop and contribute them to the community.  I love talking with others about leadership, sharing ideas, models, and feedback.  I love striving to better understand myself as a leader, my strengths, my weaknesses, and my growth.
I will be joining Augusta this year as an Assistant Director, and couldn’t be happier about this challenge.  For me, the opportunity to work at Augusta is a chance to pursue my passion at the highest level.  I can’t wait to get started and can’t wait to meet you all!
Warmly,
Chris Wearn
