Hello! My name is Brian and it is my first summer at Camp Augusta. I am very excited to be on board with the Augusta crew as it feels like family and a homecoming for me because I have been living in New Zealand the last 3 years. About 10 years ago I fell in love with the down under and wanted to live there for an extended amount of time to hike, explore, dive, hot spring and surf the beautiful land. It was such a prehistoric-like place where the birds reminded me of dinosaurs somehow and the people reminded me of 1950’s suburban America! It was sad to leave but an awesome homecoming and I am so excited to share all the gifts I have been gathering abroad with my old and new friends and colleagues in California. I grew up in Minnesota and always loved the abundant lakes of the land- waterskiing, fishing, then later four-wheeling in the vast Minnesota mosquito-infested forest. It was great for me to move on out of the Midwest after I graduated university with a marketing degree- up until then I had pretty much been the all-American, football-playing, Mountain Dew and Peanut Butter cup consuming young man. Before long I was studying philosophy and massage, Zen and Kung Fu. I jumped into the California scene with a big appetite for learning and experiencing new things. For three years I lived at a massage school where I learned skills for the trade I have now been in for 12 years- learning all sorts of techniques for relaxing, getting healthy and helping others to do the same. I have studied martial arts, dancing, drama and have been a hearty sea kayaker as well as SCUBA diver. What I have found in my working with youth and adult men is a love of producing and facilitating “sacred theatre” and skits that evoke a whole range of encounters with life that makes us all belly laugh, reflect, philosophize and get inspired to dream big as to how we can show up in life. I have traveled around Asia, danced blindfolded in Germany, sat with native American shamans and studied quantum physics and mythology. I am into anything that puts me in touch with the mystery of life and that is why I have enrolled in a PhD program in body-centered psychology and myth studies- it is a way of diving deeper into my love for myth studies and psychology and will continue to show me how the old stories can help us create new, creative and healthy ones that fit our modern times. I look forward to sharing the magic with you! Brian Tierney
